Food Storage Tips - How Long Can You Store Your Food

Blythe and I are always talking about preparing your life for weight loss success. One major component of setting yourself up for success is preparing food ahead of time. Taco Bell Drive-Thru Diet…Are They Kidding?

Recently, I saw a commercial for Taco Bell that was promoting something called the Fast Food Diet. In a nutshell, a woman spokeswoman was announcing how she lost tremendous amounts of weight by eating food from Taco Bell. You will also notice that she started the commercial with the “cover-our-butt” side note, “my results are [...]

Are we GOING BANANAS?
We’ve all heard that bananas are a good source of vitamins, minerals and a great source of ‘energy’ or carbohydrates.  I really started GOING BANANAS on this topic after I received an email from a good friend of mine the other day that just blew me out of the water… how could [...]

Eggs vs. Bagels - Which is the Better Weight Loss Food?

I remember watching Oprah when I was an undergrad at Frostburg State University (yes, I know that admitting this may require that I forfeit my man-card). In one particular show, she had a “weight loss expert” talking about how the bagel is “the perfect diet-food” because it contains a balanced blend of carbohydrate, fat, and [...]

Never Buy Fat-Free Mayo - Here’s Why…

Many of you know that I own a natural-foods restaurant called The Flying Avocado Cafe and one of my many responsibilities involves making sure that the food is as healthy as possible.
One of the favorite items on our menu is our chicken-salad and recently someone asked me about the type of mayo that we use [...]

Carbohydrates - A Quick Guide

First, allow me to give you a simple method of determining if what you are eating is a carbohydrate or not. Simply ask one question…

Did it have a mother?

If the answer is “yes” then it is probably a protein. If the answer is “no” then it is probably a carbohydrate. By this definition then meat, eggs, milk (for our argument we will say it “came from” a mother) are all proteins. Lettuce, apples, oranges, grains carrots, etc. all do NOT have a mother and therefore are considered a carbohydrate.

What is the Glycemic Index?

As you already know, not all carbohydrates are created equal. In fact, some carbohydrates can help you to lose fat while others will make it very easy for you to pack on the pounds. It does not take a rocket scientist to know that there is a difference between a head of lettuce and a hamburger bun. Both are carbohydrates but they are clearly in different classes. The Glycimic Index (GI) is a method of ranking carbohydrates by looking at how each food impacts the blood sugar…

Agave Nectar - Is It a Good Alternative to Sugar?

Agave is a plant that grows in southern Mexico, South America and the southwestern states of the United States. The sap of the Agave contains a high concentration of carbohydrates which makes it a potential alternative sweetener to plain table sugar. Agave syrup or nectar can be up to three times as sweet as sugar and is touted as a low glycemic sweetener. But is it a suitable sweetener for those who want to lose weight?

Different Kinds of Eggs - Cracking the Egg-Code

Blythe wrote a wonderful article about eggs entitled, Eggs…are they REALLY the PERFECT Fat Loss Food and it inspired me to continue the discussion. In today’s blog, I just want to briefly help you distinguish between the different types of eggs on the market. It use to be that we had only one choice in the supermarket, now we must decide among a number of different types of eggs and their prices can vary greatly. So let’s talk about some of the more commonly found types of eggs…
