Thanks for the advice, Dr. Ray! I did also buy a MyoTape to do my measurements and am recording those on the same days that I weigh myself. This is the first time I've tried weighing myself less than once a week, and I have to say that it's not easy for me. It was tempting to hop on the scale this morning at the gym. I think I'll stick with the monthly weighing through January 1 (which I can't believe is less than 2 months away) and then see how I feel about it. If I decide to weigh more often, I'll get the True Weight app- I've seen it in the app store on iTunes.

Thanks again for your response. Love the podcast and think this forum is awesome.

What a wonderful question! The answer is simple, do what works for you and ignore the rest! There is research that suggests that people who weigh themselves daily are more successful at losing weight. With that said, that may not be true for you! Remember, research can only speak to general populations, not to the individual because studies are designed to ignore the individual "black sheep". Personally, I weigh myself daily, however, I do not recommend that everybody do the same. I will admit that I am not immune to the demotivating effects of the daily weight swing, so to prevent this effect, I use an app on my cell phone called "True Weight". This app allows me to input my weight on a daily basis without being demotivated. The app provides me with an average of the weights, rather than a current weight. So if I weigh myself today and I weight 2 pounds more than I did yesterday, my "True Weight" may only show a swing of maybe 0.1 pounds. I can live with a 0.1 pound swing. Regardless of whether you weigh in daily, weekly, or monthly; always have a set plan for measuring your results. We recommend using multiple methods for assessing your results. Use body measurements, body fat analysis, photographs, etc. Just have a plan, and stick to it.

I have friends who weight themselves daily, sometimes more than once. I used to weigh in once a week, because it was required for the program that I was following, but I hated that because sometimes I'd gain water weight if I ate something salty, even thought I had eating "on program" all week and I found that frustrating.

Recently - since I've revamped my diet - I really don't like to do that. I want my focus to be more on getting fit and healthy than on "losing weight" so I'm wondering about weighing in once a month, and using the way my clothes fit to gague my progress throughout the rest of the month. I have also recorded my measurements, and plan to check those monthly as well. Any thoughts?

Good question! Bioimpedance is a tool for assessing body fat by sending a painless electrical current through the body. Lean tissue contains a lot of water and therefore conducts the electical current with little resistance while adipose (fat) tissue has little water and thus does not conduct electricity. The machine, using sophisticated calculations, assesses how this current transmits through the body and determines how much fat, lean tissue and water you have in the body. That is the “what” and the “how” of bioimpedance, but the big questions are…

“Does it work?” and “Is it accurate”

Bioimpedance can certainly be used as one tool for assessing body fat, however, there are a few guidelines to follow for best result:

Buy a scale that uses electrodes in the hands and feet. Most bioimpedance scales only send a signal through the feet which will only assess lower body composition. This is not as useful and accurate, especially if you carry more fat on top or on bottom. I do use such a scale, the one that I have used is called the InnerScan Segmental Body Composition Monitor BC-568 by Tanita. This scale offers a lot more information than standard foot sensor based bioimpedance scales.

Have a glass of water approximately one hour prior to testing. This will make sure that you have enough water in the tissues to accurately assess body composition.

Try to test on an empty stomach. Food in the stomach could alter the results.

Void the bladder and bowels prior to testing when possible.

Try to test at the same time every day.

Do not exercise prior to testing.

Use bioimpedance to assess progress more than individual measurements. If the machine says that you are 20% body fat and a week later it shows 19% body fat and two weeks later 18% then we know that we are moving in the right direction.

Remember, you must approach these types of tools with a level of sophistication that prevents you from getting worked up by one or two rogue results. In my experience, these scales can overestimate the body fat a bit. This means that if you have a body fat of 17%, the scale may show 19-21%. This is why I focus more on how things change rather than the actual individual reading when using this scale as a tool for assessing progress.
